Hello, my name is Saylor Eloise Silicki.

I go to Alice Deal Middle School and I have dyslexia.

I found out when I was in 2nd grade, my parents found out when I was in 1st grade.

It was and still is so hard.

I had to take all of these tests and I was pulled out of almost all my classes for my learning.

I never felt normal, after learning I was dyslexic.

Since my school did not say the world dyslexia, or use that language, I felt lost.

Almost all the time I feel like an outcast in school, because of how I learn. I felt like the person that does not know anything.

My parents say that dyslexia is my superpower, I never really believed it but now I know I have something special.

Something inside me that not everybody has.

I am one of the most creative people I know.

I love to write stories, learn history and French and I can put together really hard puzzles as well as build any lego set you throw at me.

I know I am smart even though reading, math facts and spelling aren’t easy for me.

5th grade was the hardest because that’s the year everyone in my grade found out.

I got teased for it, people would write on a clipboard saying, “ Saylor

has dyslexia” and other mean stuff.

We never found out who wrote it, but my teachers were very supportive.

I learned that one of my teacher’s daughters has dyslexia and that really helped me get through the year.

My dad tells me how he found out he had dyslexia and each year on my birthday we look up famous actors who have dyslexia and the same birthday as me.

So, now I’m in 6th grade and all my friends know I have dyslexia and they are so supportive. Even though I have dyslexia it does not change the kind of person I am or how much my mom and dad and brother love me or how much I love to act, sing, paint, babysit, write, decorate my room..

No! dyslexia does not define me.

This is the kind of person I am.

I am me and dyslexia is a part of me whether I like it or not,

Thank you.
